Fil de Fer Lamp by Catellani & Smith

A Fil de Fer lamp is a spherical lighting fixture of shaped, woven aluminium wire with tiny LED bulbs inside the globe. Enzo Catellani designed it after a commission that never used the prototype; Catellani & Smith later describes it as the most iconic fixture in its range. Indoor floor versions use a plug driver and floor dimmer; outdoor versions use IP-rated, typically non-dimmable drivers. Sizes in the Muretti shop include 30, 50, 70, and 100 cm indoor, and 50, 70, and 100 cm outdoor.

It is not a crystal chandelier, even when people search that phrase. The light is dotted through the wire, closer to a hanging constellation than a dining chandelier arm. Authentic Fil de Fer lamps use factory order codes (F3L, F5LG, F5IPL, F5SIPL, and related gold SKUs), published diameters, and after-sales through authorized dealers. Replicas copy the sphere photograph and omit voltage, weight, and driver type. The factory and SEE Ltd warn that unauthorized e-commerce is a common counterfeit channel. Ask for the SKU on the quote. Indoor Ø 30 cm aluminium is F3L; gold is F3LG. Outdoor pendant Ø 50 cm aluminium is F5SIPL. If a seller will not print those codes, walk away. Nuvola (linear aluminium cloud) is a related Fil de Fer family at a higher ticket; ask in consultation if you need a linear suspension rather than a sphere. Indoor pendant Fil de Fer SKUs that are not in the current shop should be requested — we will not list a diameter we cannot order.

Indoor floor lamps are for living rooms, bedrooms, and galleries: dimmable, plug-in, grey cable on aluminium and gold cable on gold finish. Outdoor floor and pendant versions are for terraces and covered exterior dining; they use resin-bonded or IP-rated drivers and are not dimmable on the current datasheet. Do not install an indoor Fil de Fer in weather.

If the terrace is windy or salt-air — including Caribbean work — confirm outdoor SKUs in consultation before you pay a deposit. See service areas when the lamp ships with a kitchen project to Turks and Caicos or the Cayman Islands. Indoor and outdoor order codes are not interchangeable.

Ø 30 cm indoor floor lamps sit beside a lounge chair without dominating a pre-war living room. Ø 50–70 cm is the common dining or loft scale. Ø 100 cm needs ceiling height, floor area, and a path through the building — the indoor 100 cm sphere is listed around 16 kg in factory materials, and freight elevators matter. We check clearances in Chelsea or on a drawing before you commit to 100 cm.

Gold anodized reads warmer in low evening light; natural aluminium reads cooler against pale plaster. Bring ceiling height and a photo of the corner or canopy to consultation. We will not guess a 100 cm globe into a six-foot ceiling or a windy balcony that needs the outdoor SKU instead.

Indoor floor: 110–240V plug driver with floor dimmer (memory last step); specify if the destination country differs from the usual market plug. Outdoor: 12Vdc drivers, 110 or 240V, not dimmable. Italy-import fulfillment is typically about five to ten weeks; US/local stock about two to three weeks when available. Shipping cost is confirmed at checkout. Pairing the lamp with a new Italian kitchen is often the reason clients start in Chelsea rather than the cart: the canopy, dimmer load, and dining sight line get specified once. The shop still works when diameter and finish are already decided.
